
DeWitt started performing on stage at the age of 13. DeWitt earned her degree from Ball State University with a Bachelor's degree in Arts. Then, when she was performing in summer productions when she met with the director, she convinced her to join UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program,where she received the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. Dewitt has claimed that she didn't meet the actor Abe Vigoda while she was at UCLA. She worked as secretary during her time at UCLA. DeWitt is well-known for her role as Janet Wood during the 1977-1984 period of sitcom Three's Company, a job she landed after being cast in the show's second pilot. Janet was also in an episode of the show The Ropers, which she appeared in in 1979. After Three's Company ended in 1984, DeWitt appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Loves in the year 1984, in which she then ceased acting for a few years. She returned to acting, taking participation in an episode of Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse in June 1991. Also, she appeared in the film Spring Fling, a 1995 TV comedy. Pinky and the Brain featured an character an adaptation of her voice voice that was voiced by another actress in 1997. The actress appeared in an episode of Cybill and made an appearance on the final episode of Living Single. The 2000s work of her includes TV shows such as Hope Island, The Nick at Nite Holiday Special and Call of the Wild.
